- This is an extensive account of the areas in which artificial
intelligence and information retrieval can interact to provide
more capable and attractive computer systems for the handling
and provision of information. The volume contains all of the
papers presented to an international seminar sponsored by NORDINFO
which brought together information scientists and expert systems
designers. It has two main themes: the potential contribution
of artificial intelligence to information retrieval via advanced
computer systems, and the application of information retrieval
research to the design of expert systems for information handling
and knowledge acquisition.
-
- The main topics covered include: man-machine interaction;
the development of search strategies; problem definition; the
organisation and handling of very large knowledge bases; the
design of user-friendly interfaces; query and dialogue analysis;
natural language interfaces; knowledge representation; and the
combining of multiple databases.
-
- This volume deals with an area of profound importance to
the future of information services and indeed, of information
professionals themselves.
