When talk of the 'microelectronics revolution' first mushroomed in the late seventies, a number of research projects were funded in the universities to examine its impact on various aspects of our lives. This contemporary book disseminated some of the findings to management, the trade unions, and all those concerned with information technology in the workplace. It illustrates the impact of changes in production processes in a number of manufacturing industries, including CNC machine tools, CAD and CAM systems, robotics, and computerised photo-composition. Managerial decision making over technological innovation, the implications for organisation structure, and manpower issues are all dealt with in detail.
