The field of research into human information behaviour is rapidly growing in significance within a wide range of disciplines, from information management and librarianship through to marketing, media studies, information systems design and consumer research. This important new collection of papers, presented to the Second International Conference on Research in Information Needs, Seeking and Use, held at the University of Sheffield, has an impressive range - including, amongst many other themes, information research in the health care sector, citizenship information needs, adolescents' choices of media, the Internet as an information source, and the information seeking behaviour of varied urban communities.

Characterised by the new emphasis on understanding the motivating influences which drive information seeking behaviour, rather than on the use of particular systems, these papers provide insights into the barriers and difficulties which people experience in gaining access to information. What is notable here, therefore, is a new attempt to bridge the sometime gap between researchers in the human information behaviour community and the information systems research community. A very large body of research is reported in this volume - highlighting new theoretical perspectives and incorporating innovative methodological approaches. It is essential reading for all involved in the vital field of information research.
