Emerging digital technologies provide both opportunities and challenges for academics, students, administrators and others involved in higher education. The Internet breaks down geographical barriers, allowing people to access vast quantities of information and convey messages to others all over the world. High-speed digital networks give rise to the prospect of a convergence between 'traditional' and 'flexible' approaches to learning. It is now possible for students to enrol in courses offered by institutions or organisations on the other side of the world without ever setting foot on a university campus. New 'virtual' universities, some unashamedly profit-driven and with little commitment to traditional scholarly values, have sprung up across the globe. The introduction of electronic media in higher education has altered, in both subtle and obvious ways, the relationship between students and their teachers.

These innovations have prompted considerable debate, the range and nature of which is reflected in the contributions to this outstanding new book. Experts from around the world who are deeply involved in these evolving educational processes distil here their experience, in a volume designed to provide direct insights for all who are facing up to the new challenges posed for teaching and research.
