The Project on School Libraries and Curriculum Initiatives, sponsored by the British Library, was designed to provide a forum for senior librarians and educationalists to meet and discuss how the school library's role in developing and implementing new curriculum initiatives might be fulfilled. Having discussed problems, practices and needs, recommendations would then be offered. Two Symposia were convened, at which senior practitioners and policy makers considered the issues. Following the first symposium a discussion document was prepared, in which working recommendations were presented to those attending the second symposium. At this second meeting the wider policy implications were considered and further recommendations made.

The present book comprises these two sets of Recommendations, together with extensive papers prepared for the Project on the background to the subject and a number of case study examples of school library/education collaboration. The findings of the Project are far-reaching in their implications, as the Recommendations call not only for a greater resource base for school libraries, but also for much increased commitment to the supporting role of the school library, at national as well as local levels. The volume will be essential reading for those concerned with school l ibraries and services to young people in general.

'a package of interesting ideas for those who are concerned about the role of school libraries and their involvement with teachers, advisers and parents, as well as pupils.... Not simply expositions of 'How we do it good', but thoughtful descriptions.... demonstrating clearly how library resources and organization were deliberately planned to support particular curriculum developments.'
Library Review

'A formidable body of experts and policy-makers have combined to produce a report which reflects their long experience.... Concise and extremely challenging.... it is to be hoped that this most valuable report will be read and acted upon by all those whose aim is to create libraries which are not merely responsive but equal partners in the process of educational change.'
LIRN

'An invaluable guide - this reviewer is delighted to see the fruits of both symposia available to a wider audience.'
