- This book represents the first major study of reading promotion
for adult readers in the UK. Sponsored by the British Library's
Research and Innovation Centre, the research findings focus on
adults's reading for leisure, pleasure and informal education,
and cover library services throughout the UK. As well as providing
information on the present state of reading promotion policies
and practices, the research brings together a wide range of expert
views on the potential for improvement. Other research and commentaries
on reading promotion are also used to inform the dicsussion and
recommendations.

- How the library takes a proactive role in advising or encouraging
their readers in what to read - widening their horizons or simply
making it easy for them to make choices - is the central concern
of this important book. By drawing together the findings from
previous user studies and reader surveys, and assessing library
policies, plans and the structures for staffing and resources
which support such services, this volume helps to identify those
factors which make for successful reading promotion and its development
as a care activity in public libraries. It is essential reading
for all public library managers, and for those concerned with
library and educational planning in general.
