Information Management is not restricted to one professional group, but is a vital part of organisational management as a whole. It is now recognised that new appoaches are required to handle both the new media and the increased amount of information that is being generated. Perhaps the most important trend is the convergence of the technologies used to create, store, and distribute information. The role of the information manager is to exploit these technologies in order to acheive optimal use of information systems.

The options available, however, can be bewildering. New methods and techniques for information management provides a practical guide through the maze of problems and choices which surround the implementation of information technology. Each entry follows a standard format and describes significant developments, along with an indication of costs, potential benefits, and examples of applications.

The guide is divided into eleven broad sections: text capture and handling; images and graphics; hardware and software; information storage; retrieval and manipulation; menu-driven systems; expert systems; text transfer systems; communications; telecommunications; legal and regulatory structures.
