In the late 1980s there was still a lack of mutual understanding of how governments exercised environmental policies. This important book sought to help remove this obstacle, by filling the information gap. It was the first co-operative publication project on environmental policies, written by experts from fourteen countries in Eastern and Western Europe. The authors include geographers, economists, sociologists, lawyers, engineers and physicists, all working in this vitally important area.

Prepared under the auspices of the European Co-ordination Centre for Research and Documentation in the Social Sciences, Vienna, the volume deals in detail with the physical, geographical and historical background to environmental problems; economic and environmental indicators; institutional structures and the links between levels of national administrations; and the environmental decision-making process, including environmental laws, monitoring, economic instruments, and public participation and education.

To improve mutual understanding during the preparation of the book, authors from socialist countries were asked to comment on and criticise national reports prepared by authors from market economies, and vice-versa. In concluding chapters, the book goes beyond national borders and deals with collaborative arrangements for environmental protection in European socialist countries and in Western Europe respectively.

This is an essential sourcebook for all concerned with contemporary environmental protection.
