Collections, in both their conventional and hi-tech forms, continue to be a central concern of library and information service managers. Many factors conspire to make effective collection management an increasingly difficult task. Reductions in the real value of budgets, inflation of book and journal prices, volatile exchange rates, changing profiles in research and teaching activities and the interests of users, and the sheer growth in the number of publications available all put more pressure on the librarian as collection manager. In addition, the increasing availability of electronic alternatives to paper, the finite size of library buildings and an increasingly wide range of demands upon the library make systematic management essential.

In this book, arising from a seminar organised by the Library and Information Research Group, fourteen experts examine the philosophies of collection management in different sectors, the particular techniques developed to cope with some of the problems, and review some national policies and initiatives.
