Since the late 1940s managers have been trying to use computers to integrate information in their organisations. Early promises of success were not fulfilled, and whilst hardware and software progressed rapidly, complete integration of information systems remained elusive. Now, suppliers of information technology claim that integration is back on the agenda, because appropriate systems are available. This important book reports on how far organisations have actually progressed towards the goal of integration.

Information handling and the management of the computer as a resource have become pre-eminent concerns in organisations of all types. Integration will allow all of the information required for management, research and development, and for the multiplicity of daily operations to be provided by one computerised information system, probably with multi-site access. To explore this process, the authors of Integrated Information Systems have interviewed senior information systems development staff in a number of organisations, who are currently tackling the problems of integration. Their findings are presented in a series of case studies, followed by detailed analysis and discussion.

They provide invaluable guidance for all information managers, whether concerned with hardware and software selection, the compatibility of management information systems, skills training for information staff, organisational support for information services, or any of the other problems associated with the development of integrated systems.

The study was sponsored by The British Library, as part of its programme of research into effective information management in organisations of all types.
