The limitations of quantitative approaches to the evaluation of IT-based communication systems have led to a search for broader and more adequate methods for assessing the overall effectiveness (or otherwise) of IT applications. These systems, such as electronic mail, fax, and videoconferencing, may influence individual performance in complex ways, and any decision to be made on the level of investment in such systems may require qualitative measures of their impact.
This book describes an attempt to develop a methodology for the consistent and systematic evaluation of communication systems using a qualitative framework, including both pre- and post-installation evaluation as well as problem-solving approaches. It considers evaluation within the context of organizational goals and individual work patterns, rather than just the technical capability of any given system. Case studies from various organizational settings illustrate the development of relevant techniques for the evaluation of information technology applications.
