- The relationship between research and professional practice
has to be considered as a two way process. Recent research programmes
aim not only to address technological issues but also to determine
the new role and needs of the information profession. Part of
the changing role of the information professional is the need
to acquire a better understanding of information users, which
constitutes a fundamental and basic research issue. In the past
it has not been uncommon for information professionals to feel
that research has borne little relevance to practice, and researchers
for their part have bemoaned the fact that research findings
have often been ignored and consequently had little impact.
-
- However, the papers presented to the 2nd British-Nordic Conference
on Library and Information Studies, published together here,
seem to indicate that the role of research in the discipline
as well as in the profession is changing, and that common research
questions and issues are being addressed. A group of distinguished
contributors address by issues such as the role of teaching and
learning in the networked environment, information technology-based
educational support offered by the public library, the development
of new tools and techniques for indexing, searching and retrieving
electronic wares, and the pressing questions of user needs and
the provision of electronic information services for the community
at large. Additionally, the future of professional development,
and the theoretical and conceptual issues underlying current
practice are analysed in detail.

- The conference was organised by the British Association for
Library Education and Research (BAILER).
