- The past decade has witnessed tumultuous changes in education,
with particular concern centring on literacy and the means by
which we achieve it. Skills for life? The meaning and value
of literacy arose in response to the debate on literacy which
was taking place in many sectors of society. It is an invaluable
source of ideas and comment for educationalists, teachers, publishers,
librarians, and all those concerned with the advancement of literacy.

- As technological advances are challenging basic definitions
of literacy, with ideas such as 'computer literacy', 'media literacy'
and 'visual literacy' permeating the library world, the traditional
role of libraries in supporting literacy is being re-assessed.
Some are broadening their collections and services to accommodate
the new forms, whilst others, frequently as a result of pressure
on resources, are being forced to narrow their focus, reverting
solely to the support of reading. The issues arising are of vital
importance; the papers collected here explore the definitions
and meaning of literacy, reading methods and assessment in schools,
trends in the publishing of children's books, literacy and multiculturalism,
computer literacy, media education, literacy and the disabled
child, new initiatives within public libraries to support literacy,
and many other subjects. It is essential reading for all concerned
with children and young people.

- The Youth Libraries Group is one of the largest specialist
groups of the Library Association of Great Britain, and works
independently and with other professional organizations to support
the provision of quality literature and library services for
children and young people. The present volume contains
papers presented to the Group's national conference.
