This book brings to a far wider public the conclusions of the Inter-University Software Committee, which was responsible for recommending the text retrieval software to be adopted by UK universities for research and teaching. It provides an in-depth evaluation of three text retrieval systems (BASIS, BRS/Search and STATUS), and a detailed evaluation scheme which may be applied in selecting any other system. Numerous functions of each system are evaluated, relating to three main areas: interfaces (command-language, customised screens and menus, and communication with other software), function (text structure, retrieval functions, output functions, control of terminology, updating, recovery, privacy and security, administration issues and system monitoring), and general issues (documentation, vendor support, installation, and hardware). The resulting list of criteria is an invaluable tool for anyone who has to select a software product; the structure of the book allows the reader to make comparisons throughout between specific features and functions of retrieval systems.

'An excellent book, and essential reading for any librarian, information professional, or computer manager seriously considering the purchase of a text retrieval package. Whilst of particular value to the higher education audience, it will also be useful reading for corporate information managers.'

'Exhaustive in both coverage of features offered by the packages and their performance is carrying out these features.... I found these tests fascinating.... the questions are those which anyone wishing to buy a free text retrieval package should be asking. For this reason, and for its readability, I would recommend this report.'

'Essential for anyone considering implementing a free text system. Such readers will be able to examine the results and tests in the light of their own requirements, avoiding some of the pitfalls as a consequence.'
